According to a report by KPMG, the online gaming market in the country has a value of $1 billion. By 2025, the number is expected to grow to $3.9 billion. The growth in the gaming industry is due to the pandemic induced lockdown and in addition to that smartphone and better internet connectivity has also contributed to its growth. Out of all the gaming segments, the mobile gaming segment has grown at a tremendous rate. The same is visible from a report by BARC & Nielsen that indicated in the first quarter of 2020, mobile games in India have been downloaded more than 7.3 billion times. This number contributed to 17% of the total global downloads. Another finding of the report suggested that before the lockdown, the gaming minutes was 151 which has now extended to 218 minutes indicating a strong incline towards gaming.

The growth in the gaming sector has opened many opportunities to students who want to do professional studies in gaming. Currently, India has approximately 165 gaming institutes that teach students to design classic games like Solitaire and Freecell to complicated game designs of PUBG and other popular games. If someone does not want to fully engage in professional studies, they also have the option of joining certification courses right after the tenth class which can be used as a foundation for future studies if the interest continues.

The second semester covers topics of OOP using C++, mathematics for computing, data structure programming, 2D animation using flash data structure along with the basics of games, game development and web graphics. The third semester teaches Maya fundamentals, 3DS max fundamentals and advanced flash animation along with Core Java, Dot Net and the students are provided with information on the gaming industry, mobile platforms and technologies. The fourth semester comprises advanced versions of Maya and 3DS Max, unity for 2D games and physics and mathematics required for games. The fifth and sixth semester comprises the advanced versions of the topics touched in the previous semester.
Students also have the option to choose interesting elective subjects like scripting for animation and games, scripting for 3D tools, audio editing, native and cross-platform smart games and 3D animation software. The popular colleges and institutions for pursuing gaming sectors in India are Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University (Pune), Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics (Mumbai), Arena Animations (branches located at different parts of India), Zee Institute of Creative Arts (Bengaluru), and ICAT Design and Media colleges (branches spread across the country). The fee of the institutes and the colleges lies in between INR 30,000 to INR 4,00,000 depending upon the college and courses chosen by the students. It is recommended first to explore one’s interest in the wide variety of branches in the gaming sector before shortlisting the colleges and the courses.
