Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati conducted the foundation ceremony for the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and the Jyoti & Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology on its campus. The initiative seeks to strengthen academic and research capabilities in these fields.
The foundation stones were laid by Mr Rahul Mehta, Chief Executive Officer of the Mehta Family Foundation, USA, in the presence of IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal and Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Puranik, Executive Director of AIIMS Guwahati. The event also included contributions from academics from universities in the United States, alongside senior faculty members of IIT Guwahati.
The Jyoti & Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology will integrate disciplines like engineering, biomedical sciences, and design, focusing on affordable healthcare solutions. Areas of work include developing medical technologies such as bionics, robotics, nanotechnology, and bioinformatics.
The Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence aims to address the growing demand for expertise in AI and data-driven problem-solving. It will focus on equipping students to address challenges and opportunities presented by emerging technologies.

Prof. (Dr.) Puranik stated that the schools would emphasise collaboration between institutions like AIIMS Guwahati and IIT Guwahati to develop technologies that address healthcare challenges effectively.
IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Jalihal noted that the new schools are in line with efforts to address critical national issues in healthcare and technology. They are expected to contribute to India’s capacity in research and development, with a focus on creating solutions to specific challenges in these areas.
