In a significant step towards advancing healthcare innovation in Northeast India, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, in partnership with the Government of Assam, inaugurated a landmark symposium on November 8. Organised by the Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII)—a joint venture between IIT Guwahati and the Assam government—the event brought together leading doctors, scientists, and policymakers to explore pathways for indigenous healthcare solutions under the “Make in India” initiative.
Dr. Ravi Kota, Chief Secretary of Assam, inaugurated the symposium, emphasising the importance of collaboration across disciplines to build a self-reliant healthcare ecosystem. “This inaugural symposium at IIT Guwahati is a bold and unique initiative, blending medical and engineering expertise to create an ecosystem that can support indigenous healthcare advancements,” he said. Dr. Kota added that IIT Guwahati and Assam’s government are actively fostering partnerships among academia, healthcare professionals, and the public sector to address healthcare challenges specific to the region, marking the venture as a model for regional development and healthcare resilience.
A core aspect of this initiative is the development of the AAHII campus, set to feature a 400-bed super-specialty teaching hospital, cutting-edge research facilities, and residential spaces for staff and students. With this infrastructure, Assam aims to emerge as a leader in homegrown healthcare solutions, reducing reliance on imports and driving down treatment costs. Professor Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, praised the collaboration, noting that AAHII’s integrated approach will make quality healthcare more accessible and affordable across Northeast India. “This project represents our commitment to a ‘Make in India’ healthcare model,” Prof. Jalihal stated, “and with the government’s support, we can address some of India’s most pressing health challenges through indigenous solutions.”
The event also featured input from Prof. Ashok K. Puranik, Executive Director of AIIMS Guwahati, who pledged AIIMS’s support for the AAHII initiative. Prof. Puranik endorsed the concept of “Design in India, Design for the World,” underscoring the need for resilience in healthcare systems. “Reducing our dependency on imported technology is essential to building a self-reliant healthcare sector,” he remarked. Joining the discussion remotely, U.S.-based cardiologist Dr. Naba Goswami highlighted the importance of industry-academia partnerships to address the healthcare needs of rural India.
Since its founding in 2022, the Assam Government IIT Guwahati Healthcare Foundation (AGIHF) has been facilitating partnerships between IIT Guwahati, the state government, and private-sector stakeholders. The upcoming AAHII campus will house six dedicated centres of excellence, focusing on stem cell research, digital health, therapeutics, precision medicine, robotics, and affordable diagnostics. These facilities aim to cultivate innovations that can serve both regional and national healthcare demands.
