In a landmark move to advance research and innovation in sustainable urbanisation, healthcare, and technology, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) Research Park Foundation has signed three pivotal Memorandums of Agreement (MoAs) with leading entities. The agreements formalised on November 4, were signed by Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, with representatives from the Assam Government Healthcare Foundation, the Centre for Urbanisation, Buildings, and Environment (CUBE), and IITM Pravartak. These partnerships are set to address the unique challenges and untapped opportunities in Northeast India.
The signatories to these MoAs included:
- Maj. Gen (Retd.) L. Padmanabhan, CEO of CUBE, IIT Madras
- Dr. Sajal Sen, COO of the Assam Government – IITG Healthcare Foundation
- Dr. Shankar Raman, CEO of Pravartak, IIT Madras, a Department of Science and Technology initiative
The event also saw participation from Prof. L. Boeing Singh, Professor-in-Charge, and Satyam Sarma, COO of IIT Guwahati Research Park, along with other notable dignitaries from IITG.
Driving Urban and Healthcare Innovation
Highlighting the potential of these partnerships, Prof. Devendra Jalihal stated, “We are committed to developing IIT Guwahati Research Park as a centre of excellence and innovation for the Northeast. Our key initiative with the Assam Government—establishing a super-specialty hospital and simulation lab—will integrate medical and engineering expertise to address healthcare challenges in the region. As urbanisation in the Northeast progresses, we are focusing on sustainable infrastructure to preemptively tackle issues faced by other urban areas across India. With these collaborations, IIT Guwahati Research Park is positioned to drive significant regional and national development.”
Maj. Gen (Retd.) L. Padmanabhan, CEO of CUBE, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “At CUBE, we aim to provide advanced solutions in sustainable infrastructure, environmental planning, and smart cities. With over 250 projects across India, we are thrilled to partner with IIT Guwahati to harness their academic strengths alongside our industry expertise. This collaboration opens opportunities to develop cost-effective, impactful solutions for the unique urban landscape of the Northeast.”
Through the CUBE partnership, IITG Research Park will establish an urban infrastructure and sustainability hub. This facility will bring together engineers, environmental scientists, urban planners, transportation experts, and policymakers to design sustainable urban frameworks, including efficient water management and transportation solutions. The initiative is tailored to meet the specific needs of the Northeast, advancing resilient and sustainable urban development in the region.
Advancing Healthcare Self-Reliance and Innovation
Commenting on the Assam Government Healthcare Foundation’s vision, Dr. Sajal Sen, COO, said, “Strengthening healthcare self-reliance is paramount for a secure nation, yet much of our advanced medical equipment is imported. Through this partnership, we aim to foster indigenous innovation in biotechnology and medical technology. The 400-bed super-specialty hospital and advanced postgraduate programmes will drive healthcare innovation, leveraging IIT Guwahati’s support to build a more resilient healthcare ecosystem.”
As part of the Healthcare Foundation partnership, IITG Research Park will host the Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII), a “Make in India” centre for healthcare technology. AAHII will focus on reducing dependency on imported technology, developing diagnostic and treatment advancements, and nurturing a new generation of healthcare professionals. Integrated with a super-specialty hospital, this centre will encourage collaborative research between doctors, engineers, and scientists.
