Guwahati: In yet another global feat for the regional film industry, an Assamese documentary film titled ‘Mon Pokhila- Dream of a Woman’ has bagged the award for ‘Best Film on Women Short Film’ at the 8th season of Indo-French International Film Festival (IFIFF) held in August 2021. It also received accolades at Hodu International Festival (HIFT).
The film bagged not only the ‘Best Film on Women (Short Film)’ award, it was also awarded the Special Jury Award for ‘Best Documentary Short film’ at the Indo-French International Festival. At the Hodu International Film Festival, it was adjudged ‘Best Documentary Short Film’.
Produced by Malabika Saikia’s Kishma Venture Pvt. Ltd., in association with Ekoda Productions, the film was “a successful effort of a larger team” consisting of Priyanka Sohoria (director), Maaruf bin Rafique (DOP), Doriyoli, Tanuj Chakravarty and Jolly Saikia. The film is a unique tale of women empowerment told through the life experiences of women and their struggles that remain unseen by society.
Sharing how closely she was tied to the making of this film, director Priyanka Sohoria said, “Mon Pokhila- Dream of a Woman, is a film that I will cherish for a long time. Being a woman living in a Northeast Indian society, I have felt the dying dreams and desires of married women here.”
“I have seen my mother and grandmother give up their dreams only to maintain a balance in the family. They have sacrificed a lot and yet nobody acknowledged it. By working on this documentary film, I have tried to live their lives and understand their needs as best as I could. Using my canvas to show people these unseen stories, I want to let them know why women are the roots of our society and why we need to let them breathe in freedom; let them fly and flourish, so they can nourish our society to be a truly better one,” she added.
The film was also recently screened in Guwahati and was applauded by prominent directors and independent filmmakers who attended the event.
Earning accolades and recognition, filmmakers from the region have been making it big across the country and worldwide lately. With ‘Mon Pokhila’ by Ekoda Productions adding more feathers to the cap, the growth of the regional film industry looks all the more promising.
