Here's who took over Mukesh Ambani as Asia's richest
China's Zhong Shanshan, a private billionaire, has overtaken Mukesh Ambani to become the richest man in Asia.
Zhong has had an eventful career ranging from journalism, mushroom farming to health care. His net worth jumped by $70.9 billion this year to reach $ 77.8 billion, making him the 11th richest man in the world. Ambani occupies the 12th position with $76.9 billion.
The 66-year-old entrepreneur is not the conventional business tycoon, and is locally hailed as the 'lone wolf'.
The onus of his success lies in two unrelated businesses, Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy Enterprise Co. and Nongfu Spring Co.
He took the healthcare company public in April, and then listed his bottled water company which became one of Hong Kong's hottest listings. His shares have jumped 155% since their debut, and Wantai's are up more than 2,000%, according to reports.
On the other hand, Ambani, who once managed to reach the fourth spot on the Bloomberg's Billionaires Index, has dropped to 12th position as he is under pressure to deliver on the digital transformation he promised.
