New Delhi: US President Donald Trump’s younger brother Robert Trump died on Saturday night due to some unspecified illness. The death occurred a day after Trump visited him in a New York hospital.

In a statement, Trump said, “It is with a heavy heart I share that my wonderful brother, Robert, peacefully passed away tonight. He was not just my brother, he was my best friend. He will be greatly missed, but we will meet again. His memory will live on in my heart forever. Robert, I love you. Rest in peace.”

Robert Trump was the younger brother of the president and was 72 years old. The president visited him in New York-Presbyterian/ Weill Cornell Medical Centre in Manhattan on Friday, hours after reports of him being hospitalised surfaced. He was also hospitalised in an intensive care unit in June at Mount Sinai hospital for more than a week. Although the cause of his death is still not revealed, the President told the reporters that Robert was “having a hard time” with an undisclosed illness.

Robert was two years younger than the president and was also a business executive and real estate developer. He was one of the four surviving children of real estate developer Fred Trump. It was there that he had also been an executive. At a certain point in time, he even oversaw the company’s (Trump Organisation) casinos in Atlantic City in New Jersey.

An aid to the president said that Trump was expected to attend his brother’s funeral. The aid also added that he has a busy travel schedule in the coming days with various plans to visit four battleground states as a part of his re-election campaign.
