Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday said he has submitted his resignation to Governor SN Arya.
Deb made the announcement after meeting the governor at the Raj Bhavan here.
He went to New Delhi and met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda on Thursday for a confabulation on the party’s affairs in the Northeastern state.
There have been rumours of infighting within the BJP’s state unit.
Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, who is related to the erstwhile Tripura royal family, is expected to take charge in the interim, sources said.
Deb, who became the CM in 2018, has often landed in controversies and in the past year there had been several rumours of him quitting his post. However, he has now officially resigned after returning from Delhi.
As of now, there have been no official confirmations about the reason but we will update the story as and when we get more updates.
Even though BJP has become stronger under Deb, he has often made controversial comments that have embarrassed the party.
In Feb 2021, CM Biplab Kumar Deb had revealed that the former BJP national president Amit Shah plans to establish a BJP government in neighbouring Sri Lanka and Nepal.
Deb had said that Shah, during his visit to Tripura, said that he plans to establish the party in neighbouring countries after winning in most of the states in India.
“We were talking in the state guest house when Ajay Jamwal (North-East Zonal Secretary of BJP) said that BJP formed the government in several states of India, Shah said, now Sri Lanka and Nepal are left. We have to expand the party in Sri Lanka, Nepal and win there to form a government,” Deb said quoting Amit Shah.
This was not the first time he made such comments. He had once said internet existed at the time of the Mahabharata, and that mechanical engineers should not go for civil services. Instead, civil engineers should opt for civil services as they know about building the society and administration.
