Agartala: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Friday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who also holds home minister portfolio, in view of the recent attacks on rival political parties, especially the Congress, and deteriorating law and order situation in the State.

Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan on Friday, former minister and Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman said, “In the last couple of days, Tripura has witnessed a series of incidents which clearly indicates deterioration of law and order situation. A total lawlessness is sweeping the state as murder, rapes and rioting has become a daily routine in the BJP-ruled state.”

Roy Barman said: “A minor girl was gang raped, two BJP leaders were killed at Kamalpur, an on-duty medical officer was thrashed by a mob and a banquet hall was ransacked in the heart of the city. In all these cases, we have failed to see any role of the police department. Police have played the role of silent bystanders”.

In the past four months, the state has witnessed as many as 23 murders while rape cases have gone up from 127 in 2020 to 137 in 2021, he claimed.

Slamming the ruling dispensation for its alleged failure in ensuring safety and security to public, Roy Barman said, “Earlier we used to see senior cops toiling hard in the ground whenever any emergency situation arises. But, nowadays the DGP and other top rank officers are nowhere to be found. The Tripura Pradesh Congress will soon issue look-out notices for them. People of the state is bearing the brunt of incompetence of the police”.

Nobody is safe under the Biplab Kumar Deb regime as a doctor was attacked at workplace and goons attacked the personal security officer and driver of a former minister, he said.

Launching a scathing attack on Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Roy Barman said, “I was attacked on February 26 last during a party event. Later, the Congress Bhavan came under attack on the same day. On May 1 last year, some miscreants attacked my driver and PSO when I was at the house of advocate Somik Deb. This is evident that I have become a political threat to many people. I feel Biplab Deb should be held responsible if I am killed in such an attack”.

The senior congress leader also expressed sharp disappointment over the progress of investigation in connection with the attack on him.

Roy Barman said three persons of a family were murdered at a village in Dhalai district’s Kamalpur sub-division and one tribal girl was raped and murdered in Dhalai district’s Labancherra village in the past few days. The people of the state have not seen the DGP or top police officials visiting the crime spots to increase people confidence, he said.

When the state is burning the chief minister keeps himself busy with attending programmes outside the state. TPCC in a meeting held on Thursday night decided to seek chief ministers’ resignation for failing to save the lives and properties of the people, he said.

AICC secretary Szarita Litphlang and TPCC president also slammed the Biplab Kumar Deb government for unleashing terror across the state as it has “lost the people’s faith”.
