Agartala: The growing rivalry between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and TIPRA motha, the party that rules the state’s autonomous district council (ADC) is now resulting in violent face-offs.

In a showdown between the BJP and TIPRA supporters, a party office of the saffron party at Mandwai bazaar under the West Tripura district was vandalised, and office furniture was set afire on Sunday. The local BJP leaders accused TIPRA supporters of the unprovoked attacks, while TIPRA said if any of its workers did wrong, they should be arrested.

Sources said tensions began to brew around a membership programme of the BJP organised at Khai Rai village council area under the Jirania police station.

“Some people first tried to disrupt the joining programme organised by the BJP but in vain. While returning from the joining event, a gang of miscreants barged into the Mandal office located at Mandwai bazaar and indulged in vandalism. The vandalised furniture was dragged onto the road and set afire,” said SDPO Jirania, Himadri Prasad Das.

The local BJP leaders have condemned the incident and said that TIPRA should not disturb the peace.

“Our party office has been vandalised, valuable furniture and documents are set afire in broad daylight by TIPRA motha supporters. A lot of people were around when the miscreants attacked our office but still, nobody stopped them. It indicates the atmosphere of fear the TIPRA people have succeeded in creating,” BJP Mandal President Abhijit Debbarma said.

Raising questions on the slogan of ‘Thansa(Unity)’, Debbarma said what kind of unity they are talking about. “When all our workers were busy in the joining programme, the attacks were carried out cowardly. Our party gave respect to Maharaja Bir Bikram, and people of the party led by his grandson tore apart the portraits of Maharaja”, said Debbarma.

About 56 voters joined the saffron party during the joining event. Reacting to the matter, TIPRA chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarman said, if there is any proof TIPRA supporters are engaged in violence, police should arrest them.
