Khowai: In extremely distressing and gruesome reports and visuals coming from Tripura’s Khowai district, a mentally unstable person went on a killing spree late on Friday evening and violently murdered five people, including his two daughters and his elder brother. Police say at least two others were grievously injured, including his wife.

In updated information on Saturday, 42-year-old Pradeep Debroy’s wife Meena succumbed to her injuries at Agartala’s GBP Hospital in the early hours, taking the death toll 6.

The incident took place at Sheoratuli, Bhir Chowmuhani under North Ramchandraghat area in Khowai district.\

“Five people including a police official died after a mason turned violent and attacked his own family members. Two of his daughters, his elder brother, a passer by and second officer of Khowai police stations died due to the gruesome attacks. The person was arrested soon after the incident late on Friday night,” DGP Tripura Police VS Yadav said.

According to the police, Pradeep Debroy worked as a mason and had been suffering from depression for the past few days. No one is clear what led Debroy to brutally start attacking his own family with a shovel.

Additional Superintendent of Police Rajib Sengupta said that Pradip Debroy suddenly attacked his two teenaged daughters and brother and killed them on the spot by hitting them multiple times with a shovel in his house in Shewratali village. He also seriously injured his wife, who was initially admitted to Khowai District Hospital, but succumbed to her injuries at the GBP Hospital in Agartala on Saturday.

Pradeep Debroy was later overpowered by the police forces, tied up with ropes and taken to the police station.

Moments later, Pradeep left the house in his violent state in Chowmuhani area and attacked a father-son duo travelling in an auto rickshaw on the road. While Krishna Das (54) died on the spot, his son Karanbir Das was seriously injured.

As soon as the news of the rampage reached Khowai police station, second officer Satyajit Mallik rushed to the spot with police and TSR forces. Debroy, at that moment, started attacking the officer, who died on his way to the hospital.

Debroy was then overpowered by the police forces, tied up with ropes and taken to the police station. While the situation is reported to be under control now, there is a sense of fear and gloom among the residents of Khowai.

The injured people – Pradeep’s wife Meena Debroy and Karanbir Das – were initially taken to Khowai Hospital and later moved to the GBP Hospital for further treatment. Police said Meena died of her injuries on Saturday, while Das is said to be in a critical condition.
