Tripura MLA raises demand for cattle protection, population control Bills
BJP MLA Sudhangshu Das

Agartala: Amid the ongoing debate over the proposed population control Bill in Uttar Pradesh and the cattle protection Bill in neighbouring Assam, Tripura BJP MLA Sudhangshu Das is set to move a private member’s resolution demanding the introduction of similar bills in the legislative assembly session.

Speaking with EastMojo, MLA Sudhangshu Das, who represents the Fatikroy assembly constituency, said that both the laws should be introduced in Tripura following in the footsteps of neighbouring Assam and Uttar Pradesh.

“The population control bill should be moved to the floor of the assembly as both Assam and Tripura have the highest population in comparison to their geographical areas,” Das said.

The BJP legislator also said that he will also bring a private member resolution in the next session of the state assembly against the unabated practice of cattle smuggling.

Speaking further on the population control bill, Das argued that the country is heading towards a serious population crisis and the resources are limited. The state too has very limited capacity and resources in hand. There is a need to enact laws so that the people can benefit largely.

While speaking on cattle protection law, Das said that cattle smuggling had been a prolonged issue in the Northeastern states like Tripura and Assam due to the geographical location and borders that we share with Bangladesh.

“Tripura chief minister had announced zero tolerance against cattle smuggling in the state. The government must ensure that the law is farmed to ensure that no cases of cattle smuggling take place in the state. The border security forces have already been instructed to tighten the vigil and sensitising the border population will also help the state tackle the situation,” Das added.

Das believes that the bills are important to be placed before the assembly due to the demand raised by a majority of the population and respecting their sentiments.

“In Hindu culture, cows are worshipped and revered as holy mothers. If the majority of people demand a law to save their faith, the government cannot remain silent. I have decided to move a private member resolution in the next assembly session on cow protection,” Das added.

Das, one of the young faces of the ruling BJP, is considered as a future leader of the saffron party. After winning his seat with a thumping majority, Das is now focusing on working for the party’s ideological goals.

The BJP MLA hopes that chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb will consider his take on the two issues as he has taken initiatives in several key issues in the last three and a half years.

“Under the leadership of CM Deb, Tripura has marked its presence at the national level and now people have started talking about Tripura for several reasons, including the development model of the state,” Das added.
