Agartala: Seven persons were arrested by the Tripura police on Sunday on charges of gang rape of four girls, including three minors.
The incident took place on June 12 at Bardhaman Thakur Para area under Ranir Bazar police station. All the accused were produced before a local court on Monday seeking their judicial custody.
Speaking with reporters, Manik Debnath, officer in-charge of Srinagar police station, said that a complaint was registered by the family members of the victims against eight persons, all of them aged between 19 and 21 years.
All the accused persons have been identified as Manjit Debbarma (19), Bir Kumar Debbarma (21), Ripan Debbarma (19), Bimal Debbarma (20), Sajal Debbarma (20), Chanki Debbarma (19) and Bishal Debbarma (21).
“We arrested the accused persons based on the complaint and they were produced before the court on Monday with charges under Section 376 (B), 120 (B), 2 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act,” the officer in-charge said.
According to the complainant, the victims were invited by their friends to meet them in a nearby rubber garden on Saturday evening.
“After the girls reached the spot, Bimal, Sajal and Ripan along with their other friends proceeded towards Bahamanipara, where the minor girls were forced and gang raped by the accused persons for hours,” the police official added.
He also said that the accused persons fled the spot leaving the victims in the middle of the road that night. However, they managed to return home by taking a lift from an auto rickshaw driver.
The family members reported the incident and accordingly an FIR was registered and the minor girls aged between 14 and 16 years were admitted in a local hospital.
“Investigation was launched and we succeeded in arresting all of them. They had confessed to the crime. We produced them before the court on Monday,” the officer in-charge of Srinagar police station added.
