Agartala: The Tripura Cabinet on Friday approved the proposal for appointment of 164 doctors through Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) on an emergency basis to deal with the outbreak of novel coronavirus.

A notification will be issued by the health department and TPSC will be asked to complete the recruitment process within a month, education minister and Cabinet spokesperson Ratan Lal Nath told EastMojo.

According to Nath, a 10-mark incentive will be given to the doctors who are engaged in the service of corona patients on a contractual basis. He added that 305 doctors have so far submitted applications in response to the recent application for contractual doctors.

“The situation was discussed in the cabinet meeting on Friday. There are enough doctors in Tripura to deal with the pandemic,” Nath said.

He also informed that at present there are 118 vacancies in MBBS post, three in homeopathy and 27 vacancies in BDS. On the other hand, there are 997 MBBS, 18 homeopathy, 42 Ayurvedic and 53 BDS doctors working in various hospitals under the Tripura government. Besides, there are 205 Ayurvedic and homeopathic doctors, 48 BDS and five MBBS doctors working under the National Health Mission (NHM) in Tripura.

The education minister said the Tripura government has realised the need for an adequate number of doctors to deal with the coronavirus situation. Therefore, it has been decided to recruit 164 MBBS doctors through TPSC.

He claimed that the recruitment process would be completed within this month and a notification would be issued soon. “There will be 100 marks for API and 15 marks for interview in the recruitment test. However, those involved in the treatment of corona patients will be given incentive marks of 10,” Nath added.

In addition, the Tripura government had recently decided to hire 100 contractual doctors and 100 nurses for the treatment of corona patients. May 5 was the last date for submission of applications. However, the deadline has been extended to May 10.

Nath said of the 305 applications submitted so far, 35 of them are MBBS, 168 Homeopathy, 90 BDS and 12 Ayurvedic doctors.

Meanwhile, Tripura crossed the 300-mark again as in the last 24 hours with 315 new people testing positive for COVID-19 and one death taking the toll to 402 so far. Currently, there are 2,174 active cases and 34,212 persons have recovered.
