Agartala: A Bangladeshi national was shot dead by BSF while smuggling cattle along the Indo-Bangla international border at Kadamtala in North Tripura district here on Saturday.
The BSF jawan claimed to have fired shots from the Pump Action Gung (PAG) in self-defense or a jawan would have been martyred in the attack of the smuggler.
According to the BSF Tripura Frontier Public Relations Officer, in the intervening night of Friday, BSF party observed 12-15 smugglers with cattle heads approaching BS Fence from India side and 10-12 smugglers ahead of IBB Fence coming from Bangladesh side for cattle smuggling in the alignment of BP.No.1823/23-S in area of responsibility of Border Out Post Yakubnagar under PS- Kadamtala, North Tripura District.
“On being challenged by the BSF troops, smugglers on both sides started pelting stones on the BSF party while few of them started cutting the IBB Fence from Bangladesh side. Subsequently, the smugglers on Indian side came very close to a BSF Jawan and attacked him with Dahs and Lathies. BSF Jawan had a narrow escape and he saved himself by taking cover of IBB Fence Gate but smugglers encircled him”, the PRO said.
Sensing danger to his life & Govt property, BSF Jawan fired 02 rounds from Non-lethal Pump Action Gun (PAG) in self-defence, resultantly one of the smugglers on Bangladesh side of IBB Fence got hit & fell down on the ground and rest of the smugglers on both sides fled away towards their respective sides by taking advantage of darkness.
The deceased was identified as Bappa Miyan (32) resident of East Batoli, under Moulvi Bazar in Bangladesh.
“Information about the involvement of Bappa Miyan in trans-border crimes has been regularly shared with the counterpart BGB. During thorough checking of the area, the party detected IBB Fence breach and recovered one Dah & one Fence Cutter lying alongside the dead body and also recovered one cattle. FIR of the incident has been lodged with Police Station and further course of action is being undertaken”, the PRO and DIG Rajib Dao informed.
