Tripura: Three held for abducting workers from Indo-Bangladesh border

Agartala: Three militants of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) banned outfit were detained by the Tripura police in connection with the abduction of three workers engaged with the border fencing.

The three persons were identified as Pathan Mohan Tripura, Jatindra Tripura, and Baisyajoy Tripura, all residents of Maldakumar Para under Ganganagar police station. All three workers went missing from the same village yesterday.

Upon interrogation of the suspects it was found that the trio were involved in the kidnapping of three NPCC workers, said Tripura police in a press statement.

The statement also cited that special operations are being taken up in co-ordinated manner on both sides of the Indo-Bangla Border (IBB).

“Our sister agencies in India are in touch with Bangladesh authorities for help in the rescue of the kidnapped persons. Neither forces will cross the IBB beyond their territory,” the statement added.

Construction work was ongoing between the border pillar number 2277 and 2278 when the ultras abducted the three labourers amid tight security arrangements.

The three abductees were identified as Subhas Bhowmik from Udaipur in Gomati district, Subal Debnath from Bishalgarh in Sepahijala district and Ganapati Tripura, a local from MK Para area.

They were employed by the National Project Construction Corporation Limited (NPCC). On receiving the information, Superintendent of Police Kishore Debbarma, commandant of Border Security Force (BSF) and the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) rushed to the spot with a huge contingent of security forces to trace the labourers.

Sources also confirmed that seven militants from the banned NLFT outfit, of which three of them including one in civil uniform crossed the border and abducted the labourers. The militants were armed with AK47 rifles, sources added.

Tripura shares 856-km-long international border with neighbouring Bangladesh, of which around 67 km area is unfenced.
