Agartala: In yet another incident of moral policing, a 45-year-old woman was thrashed and tied to an electric pole in Krishna Colony under Airport police station in West Tripura district on Saturday. The mob allegedly took “action” after the woman was allegedly found to have an illicit relationship with the husband of one of the assaulters.
“Rumpa Ghosh, (30) had alleged that her husband Sanatan Bin, (35) was having an illicit relationship with the victim for the past few years. Rumpa tried to mitigate the matter through village panchayat sabha. However, Rumpa alleged that both continued meeting each other. Angry over her husband, Rumpa and her relatives attacked the 45-year-old”, an on-duty police official said.
Speaking with reporters, Priya Madhuri Majumder, New capital complex, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) said that the team of police rushed to the spot and rescued her from the angry mob.
“We have registered a case based upon the complaint made by the victim. Five women were arrested for assaulting her victim,” Majumder said.
The police booked five persons under section 448 (house-trespass), 365 (abduction), 342 (wrongful confinement), 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 354 (B) (assault), 511 (attempt to commit offence and 34 (acts done by several persons) of Indian Penal Code.
“The accused persons were identified as Sabita Ghosh, Babita Ghosh, Rupa Ghosh, Gouri Ghosh and Jhuma Ghosh. All of them were produced in front of the Court which has sent them to judicial custody till November 28 next”, Majumder said.
Such instances of ‘instant justice’ are not new to the state. In February 2020, a woman was thrashed and humiliated by locals in a village under Birganj police station in Tripura’s Gomati district.
In September 2018, a similar incident took place in Purba Rangamati area. The woman was tied to a tree, thrashed and humiliated by a mob in a village under Birganj police station.
An incident was also reported in Tata Kalibari Chandrapur area in Agartala in 2014 following which the High Court of Tripura had registered a suo moto case and the accused persons were later sent to jail.
