Agartala: Two women were burnt to death in two different districts in the last 24 hours over demand of dowry and extra marital affairs.

In the first incident, Rupa Natta Sarkar, 22-year-old was allegedly set on fire by her husband Ripon Sarkar on Tuesday.

According to reports, Ripon was mentally torturing Rupa to bring money from her father-in-law’s house to which she refused. He then pouring kerosene on her.

The victim was rushed to Bishalgarh sub-division hospital, the doctors there referred her to Hapania hospital and to GBP hospital where she succumbed to her injuries in the evening.

In the second incident, Tripura police arrested a man for allegedly killing his wife by setting her on fire over an alleged over extra marital affair and demand of dowry from in-laws.

“The charred body of the 21-year-old housewife was recovered from her house at Kalikamura village in West district of Tripura on Monday”, police said.

The deceased Meenakshi Biswas had suspected her husband of having an extra marital affair following which Sujit Sarkar, (31) started torturing her both mentally and physically while the demand for dowry continued by her in-laws.

“The father of the deceased have accused her in-laws including her husband for her death following which a case has been registered under section 304 (B) of Indian Penal Code (IPC). We have arrested Sujit accused for killing his wife on Monday evening”, said Bijoy Sen, officer in-charge of Sidhai police station.
