COVID-19: Tripura's doubling rate at 240 days in current trend, says centre

According to the ministry of health and family welfare, 31,622 people have been infected with coronavirus in Tripura so far and with this trend, 240 days are needed to double that number

Agartala: According to the current trend, the COVID-19 infection would take 240 days for the number of confirmed cases in Tripura to double. Tripura is in a much better position in the north-east in comparison to Manipur, Mizoram and Meghalaya said the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) director, Dr Sujeet Kumar Singh during a virtual review meeting on Wednesday.

The union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan was reviewing the COVID-19 situation of seven states including Goa, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura and Uttrakhand.

During the meeting, the union minister said that of the total confirmed cases in India, 10 states—Maharashtra, Kerala, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana—amount to a total of 60 per cent confirmed cases in India', Said education minister Ratan Lal Nath.

Nath, who was representing the Tripura chief minister during the review meeting, said that the Centre praised the efforts of the state government undertaken to curb the COVID-19 infection.

The NCDC director further said that in the current Corona situation, it seems that the number of infected people in the country would double in 125 days.

He also presented the status of seven states which attended the virtual meeting.

According to the Center, 31,622 people have been infected with COVID-19 in Tripura so far, and with this trend, 240 days are needed to double that number. Besides, it will take 229 days in Maharashtra, 172 days in Goa, 119 days in Uttarakhand, 87 days in Meghalaya, 68 days in Manipur and 40 days in Mizoram to double the number of cases.

The education minister further said that serosurvey was conducted across all eight districts during which 4,776 samples of the general public were collected, of which 33.98 per cent were found to be positive for antibodies among the general public.

The highest number of samples was collected from West district with 1,238 of which 41.76 per cent were found positive for antibody, in Dhalai 25.36 per cent, Khowai 39.53 per cent, Sepahijala 41.40 per cent, Gomati 40.50 per cent, while the least samples collected from 348 samples but the positive rate was 37.06 per cent. In North Tripura district only 22.09 per cent of the 629 samples were found to be positive for antibody test.

He also said that the centre had directed all the states to remain prepared as vaccines may be available anytime.

“We have formed both state- and district-level committees to manage the situation. The frontline workers would be given the first preference for the vaccine followed by the general public. Almost 99.45 per cent of the data base for the frontline employees has been completed, while 98.73 per cent work for the private hospital and nursing home have been completed”, Nath added.
