Tripura: IPFT called bandh evokes mix response, life paralysed in tribal areas

Shops and commercial establishments here remained closed in the TTAADC areas

The 24-hour ‘Bandh’ called by the ruling BJP’s ally, Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas placing multiple demands including separate state of Tipraland evoked mixed response across the state.

Most of the shops and commercial establishments here remained closed in the TTAADC areas. However, government offices saw full attendance. Passenger rail services were suspended by the Northeast Frontier Railways.

The IPFT placed a five-point charter of demands which includes a separate state of Tipraland, implementation of the report of high power modality committee, empowerment of district council under 125th amendment, inclusion of Kokborok under 8th schedule with roman scripts and filling up vacant posts for scheduled tribes.

A delegation of four MLAs led by forest minister and general secretary of Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) on Wednesday reached Delhi to meet with the central government to place various demands.

Speaking with EastMojo, IPFT assistant general secretary Mangal Debbarma said that people have responded to the bandh positively.

“The party has called the bandh placing a five-point charter of demands. The government had made several promises ahead of the elections which are yet to be fulfilled. The protest will intensify if the leadership does not meet the demands”, Mangal said.

The IPFT lawmakers in Delhi are likely to meet with the union home minister Amit Shah, DoNER minister Jitendra Singh, Tribal welfare minister Arjun Munda and BJP national president JP Nadda other central leadership.

The additional inspector general of police (Law and Order), Subrata Chakraborty told reporters that over 600 agitators were arrested from 80 different locations across the state. However, no major incident was reported till the filing of this report.

The BJP-IPFT parties are the partners in the coalition government that jointly defeated CPIM in the 2018 general assembly election.

Of the total 60 seats, the ruling BJP-IPFT coalition government has got 36 seats, of which IPFT has eight, and the opposition CPI-M has 16 seats in Tripura’s legislative assembly.
