India wants healthy relations with Bangladesh: Envoy Doraiswami

India’s designated envoy to Bangladesh, Vikram Doraiswami, visited ongoing construction sites in Tripura

Agartala: India’s designated envoy to Bangladesh, Vikram Doraiswami who is on a two day visit to Tripura en-route to Bangladesh, on Sunday visited the ongoing construction site in Tripura.

Doraiswami took stock of the Nischintapur yard, Sabroom project site and Belonia land customs station (LCS) to take stock of the situation there.

After visiting Nischintapur site in Agartala, Doraiswami left for Muhurighat LCS in Belonia with the high officials and inspected the international border along the Muhuri river with the local MLA, Arun Chandra Bhowmik.

Speaking with reporters after inspecting the LCS and international border in Belonia, Doraiswami said that India and particularly Tripura has the goodwill for good relations with Bangladesh.

“The more we cooperate, the better it is for the ordinary people, meaning basic things including availability of food products like fish, simplification of trade, ease of communication, people to people ties, simpler transport all these are in everybody’s interest”, Doraiswami said.

He also said that if this happens, there would be more business for Bangladeshi businessmen and cheaper price of goods and services for India.

“Because of the history, there is a lot of goodwill for Tripura with Bangladesh and there is strong desire in Tripura for strong cooperation with Bangladesh. Tripura is the gateway to the northeast for Bangladesh with benefit from Tripura’s approach to looking for friendly ties with Bangladesh," Doraiswami added.

Speaking further he said that the problems that shown to him are solvable problems and they are not impossible problems.

“There is nothing that can’t be solved. I am sure with the goodwill that exists between our Prime Minister and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the determination that chief minister has shown to solve problems and increase trades and partnership with Bangladesh, I have a little doubt that these will improve and to that I would do my best," Doraiswami opined.

Later, he visited the construction site of Maitree Bridge over Feni river and special economic zone (SEZ) in Sabroom along with the MLA Shankar Roy, district magistrate Debapriya Bardhan and other senior high officials.

Earlier on Saturday, Doraiswami met with the Tripura governor Ramesh Kumar Bais and chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb in a courtesy meeting to discuss various aspects to improve relations and trade between two nations.

After meeting with Doraiswami, chief minister Deb took to twitter and wrote, “Held a fruitful meeting with India's High Commissioner-designate to Bangladesh, Doraiswami.

Extensively discussed various contours of India-Bangladesh relations and how Tripura can contribute towards strengthening the bond between the two nations”, he wrote.

Doraiswami said, “As we develop this relationship with Bangladesh, the most important neighbouring country, it is going to be of great value to India and Bangladesh, if our connectivity, travel and trade and people to people ties develop and Tripura will be critical”.
