Tripura: Huge cache of contraband items, cellphones, cash seized; 3 held

Agartala: Tripura police on Wednesday seized a huge quantity of contraband items, mobile phones, cash money and detained three persons in two separate operations in Agartala and Amtali police station areas.

Speaking with reporters, anti-narcotic branch superintendent of police R Saraswati said that acting on a tip-off, a joint operations team comprising intelligence, special branch, anti-narcotics conducted a raid and seized a huge quantity of contraband items from Agartala.

“We detained one person along with the contraband items in the city. Later, a raid was also conducted at his residence. During the raid, we seized yaba tablets, brown sugar, cash, identity cards and some documents," Saraswati said.

The joint operation team seized 52,000 yaba tablets in 260 packets, brown sugar and cash worth Rs 13.86 lakh from the residence of the accused.

A police official, who did not wish to be named, said that the accused, identified as Ratan Saha of of Shantipara, was involved in smuggling activities for a long time.

“The intelligence branch and narcotics had a close surveillance on him. We had received many complaints and allegations against him but he managed to escape every time. He was caught red-handed with drugs on Wednesday in the city during a joint operation," the official added.

In another incident, Amtali police seized 154 mobile phones, worth over Rs 27 lakh, and detained two persons while smuggling these from Agartala to Sonamura.

Speaking with reporters, Amtali police station officer in-charge, Siddhartha Sankar Kar, said that acting on a tip-off the police conducted a search operating on a private car bound to Sonamura.

“The vehicle bearing number TR07-0522 was stopped and after searching a total of 154 android mobile phones were recovered from the car. Two persons, including the driver and owner were detained," officer in-charge said.

The duo identified as Ripan Ahamed (35) and Hanif Maishan (33) resident of Subhalur under Sonamura sub-division failed to produce any valid documents.

The market price of the seized mobile phones is approx Rs 27,59,846, he added.

Meanwhile, in a recent Facebook post chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb informed that Tripura police have achieved success in the anti-narcotics drive during the past two and a half months as altogether 934 cases under the NDPS Act were registered from March 2018 to July 2020.

A total of 1,537 persons were apprehended by the narcotics wing and the police during the period while 87,000 kg dried cannabis was seized. A substantial number of tablets- 28 lakh and nine kg heroin were also recovered in the anti-narcotics drive.
