The minor was allegedly gang-raped by 5 people in a car while she was on her way back home after meeting friend on July 21
Agartala: Tripura police have arrested 10 persons in connection with the alleged gang rape of a minor girl that took place almost a week ago in Khasiamangal area under Khowai district, said Soumitra Dhar, deputy inspector general, Northern range.
Speaking with reporters, Dhar said that the police have so far arrested 10 persons in connection with the gang rape of the minor that took place on July 21, while search is on to nab the rest of the accused.
“We have arrested 10 persons including three named in the FIR, while two are absconding. We have arrested two harbourers for helping the accused persons in hiding. On July 28, we arrested four persons from Sepahijala in connection with the case, to interrogate and find the rest of the accused persons,” Dhar said.
He also said that the medical test of the victim was conducted and the statement was also recorded by the police. As per the FIR, the accused were identified as Jahid Miah, Ahmed Ali, Kasem Miah and Rahim Miah.
“Rupesh Sarkar, whom the minor had gone to meet, had contacted her over phone and after a week of chatting they decided to meet on July 21 in Chakmaghat area. On her way back home, around 6:30 pm, she was offered lift by Jahid Miah, who also hails from the victim’s villager,” Dhar added.
As soon as the case got registered, Rupesh was arrested on July 22, while Jahid Miah, Ahmed Ali was arrested from Sonamura area in Sepahijala district on July 24.
“During interrogation, we arrested five more persons, identified as Litan Miah, Ripon Mia, Alamgir Hossein and Saddam Hussein for helping the accused -- Kasem Miah and Rahim Miah — to go into hiding. We are still searching for the rest of the persons involved in the case,” Dhar said.
The development comes at a time when an online protest started by the students of Tripura University got the attention of people like Abhineet Mishra and Pradyot Kishore Manikya Deb Barman.
Netizens have been demanding capital punishment for the accused involved in the gang rape of the 17-year-old.
A case under Teliamura police station- 79/20 under Section 341, 376 D and 4 (1) of POCSO Act was registered and the accused are currently under judicial custody.
