Many of my close friends are from those communities; if my statement has hurt anyone’s sentiments, I personally seek apology, says CM Biplab Kumar Deb
Agartala: A couple of days after commenting that Punjabis and Haryanvis are less brainy, while comparing them with Bengalis, during an event on Sunday, Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Tuesday sought public apology for his remarks.
Taking to twitter, Deb wrote, “I had mentioned thoughts of some people about Punjabi and Jats during an event at Agartala Press Club. My intention was not to hurt any community. I am proud of both Punjabi and Jat communities. I have spent a lot of time among them myself."
“Many of my close friends are from these communities. If my statement has hurt anyone’s sentiments, I personally seek apology for that," he wrote.
He also said that he was aware of these communities' contribution in the freedom struggle of the country. “I can’t even think about questioning the role these two communities played in progressing India," Deb wrote on Twitter.
Earlier, on Sunday, while addressing an event organised by the Electronics Media Society at the Agartala Press Club, Deb had said, “When we talk about Punjab, Sardars are not afraid of anyone. They may be less intelligent, but they are very strong. The Jats of Haryana cannot be matched over strength but they have 'limited brains'."
Explaining further, he had said that Bengalis too have their identity. "They are intelligent. It is well known to people that none can beat the wit of the Bengalis. Every community has their own identity and is widely known for their character," Deb had said.
Sharing a 48-second video, Congress national spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said the comments made by the Tripura chief minister reflects the mindset of the BJP.
“Shameful and unfortunate. BJP Chief Minister, Tripura, Biplab Deb insulted the Sikh brothers of Punjab and the Jat community of Haryana, by calling them ‘low minded”, Surjewala wrote on Twitter.
“This is the right mindset of the BJP. Why is Khattar ji and Dushyant Chautala silent?. Seek apology, take action," Surjewala questioned.
This is not the first time that the CM created a controversy over his comments. Earlier in 2019, he said Mughals intended to bomb the culture of Tripura. In 2018, he said the Internet and satellite existed even during the Mahabharata period and it was used back then.
He also said that ducks in water generate oxygen. Although experts justified his claims later, he was trolled widely over the Internet over his remark.
