Agartala: Just a week after a 50-year-old farmer died by sucide after failing to buy a smartphone for his daughter, a similar incident of a 14-year-old girl allegedly taking the extreme step has come to light in a remote village under Sepahijala district of Tripura on Thursday evening.

This is the second such incident of suicide reported in Sepahijala district due to want of a smartphone and failing to attend online classes.

Speaking with reporters, a police official said that the girl had demanded a smartphone from her parents to attend online classes, to which her father said he would need some days to buy it.

“The father, a daily-wage labourer, failed to buy her a smartphone due to financial constraints. On Thursday, the girl had an argument with her parents in the morning and locked herself in her room before the parents left for daily work. In the evening, when the parents returned home they found the body of their daughter," an official from Sonamura police station said.

The official also said that the body was taken for autopsy and later handed over to the family members. The police have also registered a case of unnatural death in this connection.

Following the outbreak of novel coronavirus, all the educational institutions including schools, colleges, and universities are closed since March 16. However, the state government later started online classes through cable television and social media.

Tripura has 4,398 government and government-aided schools apart from 335 private schools in which around 5 lakh students are studying across the state.
