A special team from Champahour police arrested three persons from separate locations under Champahour police station
Agartala: Tripura police on Sunday arrested three members of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) from Champahour police station area.
Speaking with EastMojo, an official from Khowai district police said that based on secret information, a special team from Champahour police arrested three persons from separate locations under Champahour police station.
“All three persons arrested were identified as Nirban Debbarma (43) resident of Tulasikhar village, Samarjit Debbarma (37) and Ramakanta Debbarma (30) from Baroibari village in Champahour area. All three of them were in touch with the banned NLFT group," the official said.
He also said that after interrogation and search the police recovered and seized a number of letterheads and notes of the NLFT group.
“They have contacts with the banned group and were involved in extorting money from the villagers. All the three were produced in the court. The court has sent them in three days police custody," the official added.
Earlier in January, the police arrested three members of the banned outfit from an Agartala-bound train weeks after they served notice to the East Tripura MP Rebati Tripura.
The NLFT was banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in 1997 and has been involved in violence, operating from their camps across the international border.
NLFT has been responsible for violent activities including 317 insurgency incidents in which 28 security forces and 62 civilians lost their lives during the period 2005-2015. Peace talks with NLFT were initiated in 2015 and there has been no violence by NLFT since 2016.
