Agartala: The Tripura People’s Front (TPF) on Monday started road blockade in seven different places demanding appointment of Pradyot Kishore Deb Barman, chairman of the indigenous progressive regional alliance (TIPRA), as the administrator of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

Speaking with reporters, Patal Kanya Jamatia, president of (TPF) said that after the end of the tenure of (TTAADC) the appointment of administrator through the governor of Tripura was made, which was completely illegal.

“According to the constitution of India, no retired officer can be appointed as the administrator of the (TTAADC) without calling all party meetings. The rights of the indigenous people have been curtailed”, Jamatia said.

She also said that the road blockade has been called protesting against the decision of the governor and demanding the transfer of power at the hands of Pradyot Kishore Manikya Deb Barman, who is the royal family member.

Earlier on May 18, Tripura governor Ramesh Bais nominated former Tripura chief secretary G Kameshwara Rao as the administrator of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), after the tenure of the executive committee was dissolved.

Speaking further, she said that the governor has appointed an administrator of his choice, who does not have any connection with the indigenous people by any means.

"A memorandum was submitted to the governor on May 23 objecting the nomination of the administrator. We had also been informed that a movement would be called if the demands are not met. Today's movement was a part of our memorandum," Jamatia added.

The road blockades were done in Khamtingbari in Baramura, ADC Sadar Khumulwng, Baijalbari in Khowai district, Ambassa in Dhalai district, Maharanipur, Amarpur in Gomati district, Virchandra Manu in South district, Demdung in Dhalai district.

The TPF president also threatened to hold massive protest programs if the royal scion is not appointed as the administrator of the TTAADC within a month.

Speaking with EastMojo, BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee said that the demand of the TPF was unconstitutional and the royal scion cannot be appointed as the administrator since he does not hold any constitutional post.

“With the end of the TTAADC tenure there was no other option but to appoint an administrator since the council was dissolved on May 17. The governor is the head of the TTAADC for six months as per the constitutional norms," Bhattacharjee said.

He also said that the TPF leaders have a slight lack of idea about the constitution. However, there is no objection to one holding a democratic protest unless it harms the interest of the public.

Reacting to the matter, opposition CPIM leader and Left Front convenor, Bijan Dhar marked the leaders are the opportunities.

“The state government has decided to appoint the administrator in the TTAADC after the tenure of the council expires. The road blockade is not expected at a time of COVID-19 outbreak. The election must be conducted as soon as possible after the end of the lockdown," Dhar said.
