Tripura's cart puller wins praise at PM's 'Mann Ki Baat' programme

Despite earning meagre Rs 200 daily, Goutam Das, a 51-year-old resident of Sadhutilla on the outskirts of Agartala, donated rice & pulses to the needy persons during COVID-19 lockdown

Agartala: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised a cart puller from Agartala in his Mann Ki Baat programme for helping the needy with ration amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite earning around Rs 200 every day, Goutam Das, a 51-year-old resident of Sadhutilla on the outskirts of Agartala, had donated rice and pulses to help the needy persons during the lockdown.

He spent over Rs 8,000 from his savings to purchase rice, pulses and took out his cart to distribute the ration among the needy people.

PM Modi in his address on Sunday hailed Das along with the others who stood up to help the needy with whatever little possible from their end in serving the poor during the pandemic.

“There are many people who have donated everything for the service of the others. One among them, a cart puller Goutam Das from Agartala, has fed the needy people by buying rice and pulses from his daily income," PM said in his address.

"Seva mein apna sab kuch samarpit kar dene wale logo ki sankhya angina hain. Isi tarah, Agartala mein thela chala ke jiwanyapan karne wale Goutam Das ji apne roj mara ki kamai mein se har roz dal chawal kharid kar jaruratmando ko khana khila rahe hain," he said.

Union minister of state Dr Jitendra Singh also appreciated Das. Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “During #MannKiBaat , PM Sh @narendramodi applauded Shri Gautam Das who is a cart puller from Agartala,#Tripura , #Northeast and has been feeding the poor and needy every day, using the money from his daily earnings. @BjpBiplab”

Later, chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb met him at his official residence and greeted him for his service towards society. He also promised him a job for his son and a loan to him.

Speaking with reporters, Deb said the Prime Minister found him as an ‘antim byakti’ (last man). "We will help Goutam Das and his family. His son has studied till Class VIII; however, he tries to help his father in every possible way. We have people like them in our state who are completely dependent upon others but yet donated food the needy," he said.

“Happy to meet Goutam Das, a cart puller from Tripura who has spent his savings to serve people during lockdown period. In today’s #MaankiBaat programme PM @narendramodi ji also appreciated the efforts of Goutam Das. He is an inspiration to many, our Gov’t will always support him," Deb tweeted.

Speaking with reporters, Das said that he was very happy to have been chosen for such an honour, despite hailing from a small state and among so many people. He thanked PM Modi and CM Deb.

“The chief minister has assured a job for my son and a loan for me during the interaction at his residence. One of my children will get a job," Das added.
