Agartala: Amid the outbreak of COVID-19, the Tripura government has decided to procure 20,000 MT of paddy from the farmers of the state at a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 18.15 per kg.

Law minister Ratan Lal Nath said that the state government would spend Rs 41.63 crore in procuring the second crop in Kharif marketing season (KMS).

A total of 22 purchase centres would be operating across the state in a phased manner from May 26 to August 31.

Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb also announced this on twitter.

“In a Cabinet meeting today we have decided to procure more 20,000 MT paddy directly from our farmers at MSP of Rs. 18.15 per kg. An amount of total Rs. 36.30 crore will directly go to the farmers of Tripura. The paddy procurement drive will begin on May 26 next of this year”, Deb wrote.

“The state government will spend Rs 41.63 crore in purchasing the paddy from the farmers at MSP while the union government will reimburse Rs 37.14 crore, said Law minister Ratan Lal Nath.

He also said that intending to minimize the expenditure burden and formalize the engagement of local millers, food civil supplies and consumer affairs department had floated an e-tender on May 02. The bids were opened on May 08.

“In total, 3 rice millers participated and their bids were found to be technically responsive. These are M/s Sarvasiddhi Agrotech Private Limited, M/s Tropical Beverage Private Limited and M/s Tripureswari Agro Products Private Limited”, Nath added.

Earlier, the Union minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution Ram Vilas Paswan had agreed to procure 50,000 MT paddy at a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 18.15 per kg after a meeting with Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb in November last year.

In 2018, for the first time, paddy procurement was done in Tripura after the BJP-IPFT government came to power. Paddy was procured directly from the farmers at MSP of Rs 17.50 per kg from across the state.

In the first two phases, the state government had procured 10,000 MT and 16,870 MT paddy (last season), respectively, directly from the farmers at MSP.
