At least 5,000 houses damaged, 4,200 take shelter in relief camps following hailstorm that hits 3 districts -- Sepahijala, West Tripura and Khowai -- in Tripura
Agartala: At least 5,000 houses have been affected and over 4,200 people taken shelter in relief camps following a hailstorm that hit three districts -- Sepahijala, West Tripura and Khowai districts of Tripura on Wednesday.
Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Thursday visited the hailstorm-affected areas under Sepahijala district to take stock on the situation.
Visiting the storm-affected areas with the senior officials and leaders, Deb interacted with the people and instructed the officials to extend all possible help at the earliest.
The chief minister also handed over cheques of Rs 5,000 each as immediate relief to the families which were affected in the hailstorm and assured to provide more support from the administration after assessment of the damage by the authorities.
On Wednesday, at least 500 houses were affected due to a heavy hailstorm in different parts of state including Baidyar Dighi, Golaghati Bazar, Mohanpur ADC Village, Pathaliya Panchayat, Golaghati Panchayat (Marak Para), Chikancherra Panchayat ( Bhatilarma) & Takarjala under Sepahijala district.
Deb took to his Twitter account and wrote, “Yesterday's heavy hail storm has effected our State badly. Approximately 500 houses have been affected. 5 relief camps opened immediately, where about 550 people are staying. We are committed to help everyone in this crucial period when we are already fighting against COVID-19,” Deb wrote.
He also wrote, “Visited storm-affected areas under Baidyar Dighi, Sepahijala District today along with officials. Checked the ground realities & interacted with local people. Extended immediate financial assistance. Our Govt stands with the people affected by the storm.”
A report from State Emergency Operation Centre provided to the media informed that three districts -- West Tripura, Khowai and Sepahijala -- were affected in the hailstorm. Three sub-divisions under Sepahijala district -- Bishalgarh, Jampuijala and Sonamura -- were largely affected during the hailstorm.
According to reports, the official residence of the Sepahijala SP at Bisramganj got damaged due to the storm. One of his personal guards was injured when he was trying to escape from the guard room, which got damaged. About 300 houses were severely damaged, 400 partly in the district, reports added.
In Jampuijala, over 1,720 houses were severely damaged following the hailstorm and thunderstorm on Wednesday evenig.
Meanwhile, a total of 12 relief camps have been set up (all in Sepahijala district), where 1,170 families have taken shelter. A total of 200 houses have been damaged fully, 2,417 severely and 3,010 partially, reports said.
