COVID-19: Tripura govt announces Rs 233-crore package for homeless

Rs 7.22 crore would be spent in providing benefits to over 25 lakh people from BPL category & 2 lakh from APL category, says minister Ratan Lal Nath

Agartala: In a bid to fight the outbreak of coronavirus aka COVID-19, the Tripura government announced a Rs 233-crore package on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference, law minister Ratan Lal Nath said that the state cabinet decided to provide ration to the people across the state including the homeless ones.

“The state government will grant free ration for the month to the below poverty line (BPL) and Antodaya Annapurna Yojana (AAY) families. The facility would be provided to over 50,000 people registered under the above poverty line (APL) category, although they are actually poor,” Nath said.

In Tripura, there are over 3.40 lakh families registered under the APL category, while there are 5.79 lakh poor families. This includes 1.09 lakh AAY and 4.70 BPL families, respectively. “A total of Rs 7.22 crore would be spent in providing the benefits to over 25 lakh people from BPL category and 2 lakh from APL category,” Nath added.

The facility of take-home food to the students of the primary and elementary sections would be given under the mid-day meal scheme and pregnant and lactating mothers would also be given similar takeaways. A total of Rs 75 crore would be spent in crediting advance social pension to all beneficiaries.

“The scheme would cover over 40,000 workers involved in construction across the state. They will credit it into the accounts through DBT mode and they would continue to receive Rs 1,000 for the next three months.

The government earlier announced free ration for 15 days. The benefits were revised and doubled. Among them, AAY beneficiaries would get Rs 35 kg of rice.

The law minister also said that the state government has sufficient stock of ration to keep the supply smooth as per their demands
