Cabinet gives approval to provide smartphones to youths under ‘Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana’ scheme, announces education minister Ratan Lal Nath
Agartala: Keeping the promise made prior to the state assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Tripura government has decided to distribute smartphones to 14,608 final-year undergraduate (UG) students of all government colleges, institutions and universities across the state.
The BJP before coming to power while releasing its manifesto had promised to provide free smartphones to the youths if voted to power.
Speaking at a press conference, education minister Ratan Lal Nath said that in a recent meeting of the council of ministers, the cabinet has given approval that would provide smartphones to the youths under the ‘Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana’ scheme.
“In a recent meeting, the Cabinet has decided to provide mobile phones to the youths under the scheme of ‘Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana’. The need for a smartphone in this digitally connected world cannot be overemphasised. The smartphone is helpful in opening up huge opportunities for developing skills, finding resources to enhance knowledge and availing employment opportunities,” Nath said.
He also said that providing a grant for the purchase of smartphones to the students of the final year will empower them digitally and help them leverage the advantages of an interconnected world. The scheme will be implemented from the financial year 2020-2021 and the benefit would be once in a lifetime.
“We have identified 14,608 students across the state who are in final year and pursuing their undergraduate degrees from 38 government colleges, institutions, and universities. A total of Rs 7.30 crore would be spent in providing the smartphones,” Nath added.
He also said that the government will provide Rs 5,000 to each eligible student for purchasing smartphones and the amount would be transferred credited in the bank accounts of the students.
“The entire process of filing application will be done through and IT platform which has been developed by the Directorate of Information Technology. After successful registration, they have to provide their personal information like date of birth, address, Aadhaar number, college and institute name and account number of bank. On procurement of a smartphone, each student will update details of his smartphone on the online portal including invoice to be countersigned by the respective institution heads,” education minister added.
