Agartala: In a bid to boost air connectivity in Northeast India, the first direct passenger flight between Mizoram capital Aizawl and Tripura capital Agartala via Guwahati in Assam was launched on Saturday.

To be operated by budget-carrier IndiGo under the Union aviation ministry’s ‘Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAAN)' scheme, the new daily flight was flagged off in their respective states by Mizoram CM Zoramthanga and Tripura transport minister Pranajit Singha Roy on Saturday.

Here's all that you need to know about the new daily flight between Aizawl and Agartala:

* The flight with a total capacity of 78 seats was flagged off at Mizoram's lone Lengui Airport with 47 passengers on board, said Sanjeev Jindal, regional executive director, Airports Authority of India-North East Region.

* The aircraft received the ceremonial water cannon salute at MBB Airport on its arrival in Agartala on Saturday, Jindal added.

* Mizoram and Tripura will now have an air link with each other for the first time in history.

* According to IndiGo vice-president Vijay Matta, Aizawl is the airline's sixth destination in the Northeast and the 62nd domestic destination and 85th international destination.

* The airline will operate an ATR aircraft on the Aizawl-Guwahati-Agartala sector.

* According to an official, fare has been fixed at Rs 2,248 for Guwahati to Aizawl, Rs 3,632 for Aizawl to Guwahati and Rs 1,251 for Agartala to Aizawl.

* A flight on the Aizawl-Kolkata-Delhi route will also be launched in the future, said IndiGo's Matta.

* New air service in Dibrugarh and Tezpur is soon going to be started in Assam from later in March this year, said AAI's Jindal.

* Guwahati international airport in Assam is the busiest airport in the region, followed by the MBB Airport in Agartala with over 1.8 million passengers in 2019, said Jindal.

* The AAI is planning to start a Greenfield Airport at Holangi in Arunachal Pradesh later this year. Arunachal is the only state which is least connected in the region. The state has helicopter services from helipads and small airports in Tezu and Itanagar, Jindal said.

* We are hopeful that more airlines like GoAir and Vistara would start operations in Tripura connecting with the rest of the country as discussion with them is going on, Tripura minister Singha Roy said.

* At present, Tripura is connected with West Bengal, Delhi, Karnataka, Assam and Mizoram. Connecting flights to other states like Maharastra and Tamil Nadu is also available.
