International buyer-seller meet will also be organised at Hapania ‘International Fair Ground’ in February-end, says Tea Board of India deputy director Joydeep Biswas
Agartala: The Tripura tea board has decided to organise a ‘Run for India Tea’ with an aim to raise awareness among the masses on February 19, said Tea Board of India deputy director Joydeep Biswas.
Speaking with the reporters, Biswas said that similar events were also organised in Silchar and Nilgiri by the Tea Board of India in collaboration with Assam and Tamil Nadu tea boards.
“An international buyer-seller meet is also likely to be organised at Hapania ‘International Fair Ground’ in the end of February. The Tripura tea industry is over 100 years old and it has gained the attention of the market with its organic tea, green tea and white tea, among others, Biswas said.
Tripura Tea Development Corporation chairperson Santosh Saha said that the tea board is supplying tea across 231 ration shops in Agartala through the public distribution system (PDS) and the supplies have increased over the months.
Plans to expand tea supplies to across the state through fair price shops from April is being done by the TTDC, Saha said.
“Currently, we are supplying tea in 231 ration shops and the response is huge from the people. We have decided to start supplying tea through all ration shops from April and that would need 15 lakh kg tea,” Saha said.
TTDC produces 9 lakh kg of tea annually in its two processing factories, whereas the required amount would be more than Rs 15 lakh, so the TTDC would purchase the rest from private tea states like Ludhua in South Tripura district which have their own processing factories.
“Tripura has 58 operational tea gardens, including 42 individually owned, three are run by Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC) and 13 are operated under cooperative societies. There are around 3,000 small tea growers who receive government support in running their gardens. A total of 6,885 hectares of land is covered under tea cultivation,” Saha added.
