Tripura: Ganja worth Rs 1.63 cr seized, destroyed in Sepahijala

Agartala: In yet another major operation launched on Sunday, the security forces seized a huge quantity of ganja, besides destroying ganja plants, collectively worth more Rs 1.63 crore.

The joint team of Border Security Force (BSF) along with the SDFO Sonamura and the forest protection unit of Boxanagar reached Ghatigarh area in Boxanagar of Sepahijala district.

When the ganja growers saw the security forces, they carried out an attack over them. However, the troops effectively handled the situation and fired non-lethal ammunition to stop them. They, however, managed to escape into a dense forest, a press note said.

The joint team recovered 18 drums and nine bags containing 889 kg dry ganja concealed in three different places, along with eight motorcycles.

The team also destroyed 4,500 mature ganja plants spread over 3 hectares of forest land. The total market value of the seized and destroyed contraband is said to be worth Rs 1,63,45,000.

During the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, BSF troops also succeeded in seizing other contraband items with a collective market value of Rs 89,098, the press note added.
