Agartala: Amid widespread protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) across the Northeastern states, 12 people -- including 11 Bangladeshis -- were detained along the India-Bangladesh international border by the BSF and Tripura police on Monday.

Reports of illegal influx into Indian territory turned true on Monday after nine people were arrested by the Tripura Police from Matai village and three persons including one Indian national were arrested by the BSF jawans in Gournagar area of Unakoti district.

Speaking with EastMojo, Brishaketu Debbarma, MLA of Simna constituency, said that influx should not happen and even after making several requests to the BSF, the problem still persists.

“On December 28, a joint team visit of the BSF, SDM and local police was made in the same area from where the influx was reported on Monday. The villagers spotted them and thereafter the police arrested them,” Debbarma said.

The BSF jawan was not deputed on the spot from where the influx took place. Senior officials of BSF have assured to take necessary action against those responsible for the illegal entry into the Indian territory.

Nine of them were arrested, out of which five are women. Those arrested from Matai village were identified as Bakul Das (30), Putul Das (75), Anil Das (70), Ranjan Das (44), Ranika Das (7), Susmita Das (20), Rima Das (14), Minu Das (45).

They failed to provide any legal document on being arrested and they were produced in court on Tuesday. The Sundartilla outpost police arrested them just 500 metres from the international border.

On the other hand, those arrested by BSF in Unakoti district were identified as Masum Miah (33) and Md Rashid (55) along with a resident of Tripura -- Farukl Uddin. All three were produced in the court on Tuesday.
