Moral policing? Tripura woman thrashed by mob for ‘illicit affair’
Agartala: In yet another incident of 'moral policing', a woman was thrashed and humiliated by locals in a village under Birganj police station in Tripura’s Gomati district on Saturday. The mob allegedly took “action” after the woman was allegedly found to have an illicit relationship with one of her neighbours.
“A 28-year-old was caught red-handed by a section of villagers under Birganj police station, 80 km from state capital Agartala, in Devbari village under Gomati district. The villagers later thrashed the victim, and started beating her black and blue, all because she was allegedly having an illicit relationship with one of her neighbours,” Birganj PS officer-in-charge Subrata Barman said.
As per villagers, the woman was caught red-handed at her residence on Saturday. The sister of the woman, however, had a different story to tell. She was working at her home when neighbours rushed to her and started thrashing from one part to the other part of the village.
A case under Sections 457, 325, 239, 506 and 34 of the IPC have been filed against the accused villagers. All the people accused in the case are women and neighbours of the victim, the OC said.
The victim is currently undergoing treatment in Gomati district hospital and is likely to be released soon, the OC added.
Meanwhile, when contacted, Tripura Commission for Women chairperson Barnami Goswami she said she was not aware of anything and would soon take stock over the incident.
Such instances of ‘instant justice’ is not new to the state. In September 2018, a similar incident took place in Purba Rangamati area. The woman was tied to a tree, thrashed and humiliated by a mob in a village under Birganj police station.
A incident was also reported in Tata Kalibari Chandrapur area in Agartala in 2014 following which the High Court of Tripura had registered a suo moto case and the accused persons were later send to jail.
