Agartala: A day after an employee of the Tripura food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department wrote a letter asking to provide poison for him and his family members due to non-payment of his salary for months, Belonia sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Manik Lal Das said that it was done to divert the departmental proceedings being taken against him for participating in the recent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Speaking with EastMojo, Das said that he was not aware of such a letter. “My office has not received any letter from him and the allegation he has made through the letter is not true since only two months of his salary is pending because his work report is yet to be received,” he said.

Das also said the working report was pending due to which the salary was due and now it was under process. “Today itself, the payment would be made,” he added.

“He was found that he was actively involved in a protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and as a government employee, he cannot be involved in such protest. A proceeding against him has been contemplated. So, maybe to divert the attention of the department, he used this trick, this may have been one of the reasons,” Das said.

Earlier on Saturday, Brajalal Debbarma wrote a letter to the Belonia SDM through SDM Longtharaivalley seeking poison for him and his family following non-payment of the salaries for several months.

“…I would like to enlighten you hat my wife and I have been repeatedly requesting you to kindly make payment of my monthly salaries. But unfortunately, no response has been given from your kind end till date. It is to be mentioned here that my family members are passing hard days (without required food & medicines) for the want of money. Under the above circumstances, I, therefore, request you kindly arrange to supply poison for me and my family members by 23rd Dec 2019 (as we are ready to take poison instead of food)….,” Brajalal Debbarma said.

Debbarma identified himself as the accountant for Tripura food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department in his letter and his letter had gone viral on Facebook and other social media.
