Demanding scrapping of CAB and to press for other demands, members of TSP and IPFT staged demonstration in Tripura and New Delhi respectively
Agartala: To press for their various long-pending demands, including scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, members of Tipraland State Party (TSP) and Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) staged demonstration in Tripura and New Delhi respectively recently.
Tipraland State Party (TSP) staged demonstration opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2019 across Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) earlier this week.
The strike, which was called on Monday, received a huge response and no untoward incident was reported.
Speaking with reporters, TSP president, Chittaranjan Debbarma, said, the strike has been called over two major demands-- granting a separate state, ‘Tipraland’, for the indigenous people of the state and scrapping of CAB 2019.
“The strike was successful as people have supported our demand for the indigenous people. The state has suffered a lot due to huge influx from time to time,” Debbarma said.
The indigenous people were in majority once upon a time in the state, but due to over influx in the state, the majority has now become minority in their own state.
“Many national parties like CPI-M and Congress have also opposed the bill but nobody has protested against it. Till 1958 around eight lakh illegal foreigners came in Tripura and in 2001 around four lakh came and take [took] shelter here. Everyday, illegal migrants are entering inside the state but no one is pushing them back. In the year 1994 when the summary revision of voter list was conducted around 1.35 lakh fake voters were found and in 2012 at least 1.48 lakh fake voters were found. But nothing was done from the government end. This is why we are demanding to scrap the Citizenship Amendment Bill and implementation of Tipraland,” Debbarma said.
Earlier on Friday in a meeting between the union home minister Amit Shah and the leaders of the indigenous political party everyone had opposed CAB from being implemented in the state.
On the other hand BJP’s ruling ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) staged a dawn to dusk sit-in demonstration in 34 different locations, including at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi demanding the scrapping of Citizenship Amendment Bill and the separate Tipraland state for the indigenous people of the state.
“Sit-in demonstration was held in different location of the state against CAB and separate Tipraland state. We have also demanded the implementation of NRC in the state so that the illegal migrants can be identified by the government. The state and central government should do the proper and permanent solution of the Brus in the state and inclusion of Kokborok language in Roman script in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution,” said forest minister and IPFT general secretary, Mevar Kumar Jamaita told reporters.
Additional inspector of general (AIG) law and order, Subrata Chakraborty said, “No untoward incident has been received so far. We have deployed police, state paramilitary Tripura State Rifle and CRPF jawans across the TTAADC to maintain the law-and-order situation. The strike was peaceful.”
