Agartala: In a bid to boost the economy of farmers in Tripura, chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Wednesday met with the Union minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution Ram Vilas Paswan.

In the meeting, it was decided that the FCI would purchase 50,000 MT of paddy from the farmers of the state at a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 18.15 per kg.

Deb, who is in New Delhi to attend the crucial meeting called by Union home minister Amit Shah over the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), called upon Paswan along with officials of Food Corporation of India (FCI) in his office to discuss over paddy procurement keeping the farmer's concerns in mind.

Last year, for the first time, paddy procurement was done in Tripura after the BJP-IPFT government came to power. Paddy was procured directly from the farmers at MSP of Rs 17.50 per kg from across the state.

In the first two phases, the state government had procured 10,000 MT and 16,870 MT paddy (last season), respectively, directly from the farmers at MSP.

Now the FCI has agreed to procure 50,000 MT of paddy directly from the farmers at MSP of Rs 18.15 per kg. In the meeting, FCI officials also agreed to arrange both the investment and machinery required for the paddy procurement process.

Deb also informed Paswan about his commitment to provide free, clean and pure water under Atal Jaladhara Mission, which will be delivered to every household in Tripura by December 2022. Water quality will be as per BIS standard, a press note said.

The same farmers, who were earlier selling rice at a lower rate, are now receiving benefits following the pro-farmer decisions by the state government.

After the decision, the farmers would register a huge monetary benefit and it would have a major contribution towards the efforts made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in order to achieve the target of doubling farmers’ income by 2020, the press statement added.
