Agartala: The Tripura government has ordered a probe into the death of a sub-inspector after a van drove over him during a vehicle check near Kalamchoura village of Sonamura subdivision in Sepahijala district on Thursday night.
The incident took place when sub-inspector Durga Kumar Hrangkhawl was inspecting vehicles on receiving a tip-off about a van carrying contraband items approaching towards them.
The 55-year-old sub-inspector hailed from Hrangkhawl village of Teliamura sub-division of Khowai district. He is survived by his wife, daughter and son.
On Friday afternoon, the body of the slain police officer was brought to the Police Martyrs Column at AD Nagar Police Line. State law minister Ratan Lal Nath along with senior cops paid tributes to the fallen officer and laid a wreath before the body. They also observed two minutes of silence amid bugles sound.
Director-general of police (DGP) Akhil Kumar Shukla said that Hrangkhawl was a genuine person and a brave hero.
“Hrangkhawl joined Tripura police in 1987 as a constable and later became a sub-inspector. It is sad that we lost a person and a brave officer like him. We have registered a case and seized the vehicle. It is not an accidental death but murder. We will start our investigation,” Shukla said.
Law minister Nath said, “Today Durga Kumar Hrangkhawl was martyred at GB Panth Hospital. It is very sad news for us.”
Hrangkhawl was checking vehicles when a van ran over him on Thursday night. He was rushed to Boxanagar Primary Health centre, which then referred him to BR Ambedkar Hospital and Medical College in Agartala. He was later to shifted to GB Panth Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning.
