Agartala: The Tripura government has decided to elevate the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) into a “territorial council” to provide more autonomy and financial grants to it.

Speaking at a press conference, tribal welfare minister and Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) general secretary Mevar Kumar Jamatia said that the decision to elevate the ADC was taken in a meeting of the council of ministers held at the civil secretariat on Friday.

“In the meeting, it was decided that the district council will be elevated into a territorial council by all the ministers of the cabinet and chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb,” Jamatia said.

The TTAADC comprises more than 68% of the total geographical land and is home to one-third of the population of Tripura.

The government has also decided to increase the total strength of the tribal council from the current 30 to 50 seats and also the department from 17 to 43.

Speaking further, he said that the state government received a letter from the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) seeking the state government’s recommendations for the elevation of the tribal council.

“The parliamentary standing committee after judging our recommendations will send the proposal to the MHA and later to the parliament to form a bill for amendment,” he said.
