ATM cloning: Turkish, Bangladeshi fraudsters nabbed from Kolkata

The 4 accused had allegedly stolen money from bank accounts of several customers in Tripura through ATM skimming devices; SBI sounds alert across all states

Agartala: In a significant development, the Tripura police arrested four persons, including two Turkish and two Bangladeshi nationals, who had allegedly stolen a huge amount of money from the bank accounts of customers through ATM cloning devices installed in Agartala.

Through a statement, the cyber crime branch of the state police said, “Based on our constant efforts at Cyber Crime Unit of Tripura Police Crime Branch for the last few days and effective inputs, four people including two Turkish nationals -- Hakan Zanburkan, Fettah Aldemir -- and two Bangladesh nationals -- Md Hannan and Md Rafiqul Islam -- were detained at Belgharia in Kolkata in the wee hours of November 19.”

“They have been detained with reference to the ATM skimming and card cloning cases registered in Agartala, Tripura very recently. Our team has already moved to bring these infamous few to Tripura,” it further said.

Earlier on Monday, the deputy commissioner of police (crime), Guwahati had issued a look-out notice against two Turkish nationals with photographs and details over their alleged involvement in the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) skimming fraud cases.

Acting on a tip-off, the cyber cell of Kolkata police raided the hideout in Kolkata Belgharia area and nabbed the two Turkish nationals.

On interrogation of the two detained persons, the police later arrested two Bangladeshi nationals, identified as Mohammed Hannan and Mohammed Rafiqul Islam.

Till Monday morning, a total of 28 cases were registered in Sadar sub-division of Tripura.

The accused persons were involved in ATM cloning and hacking the bank accounts of people in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Agartala, and Guwahati. A team of Tripura police has left for Kolkata to bring the four accused persons back in Agartala after completing legal proceedings there.

Meanwhile, it is learned that the State Bank of India has sounded an alert across all states over the ATM cloning and to avert further illegal transactions from any accounts.
