Agartala: The Congress party will fight tooth and nail against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s attempt to implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) in Parliament, said a delegation of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in Agartala, the capital of Tripura, on Tuesday.

The six-member delegation of Congress is on a tour of four Northeastern states, including Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura, to gather opinions of the stakeholders and the party leaders over the CAB and the NRC after which the delegation would submit a report to AICC president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi.

Speaking at a press conference, Rajya Sabha MP and former Union minister Jai Ram Ramesh said that a meeting was held in the state Congress headquarters and discussion was made over three issues, namely Citizenship Amendment Bill, Brus’ starvation deaths and the state government performance in Tripura over the past 19 months.

Congress is 100% against the implementation of CAB. We will oppose it on grounds of principle as it is against the people and the Constitution of India, Ramesh said.

“The Citizenship Amendment Bill is an attempt to divide the Indian society and trying to polarise society. We, the Congress party, strongly oppose it because the CAB violates Article 14 and Article 21 of the Constitution. The CAB is anti-secular and anti-constitutional since it is against the preamble of the Constitution,” he said.

Ramesh also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah have said that they adore Dr BR Ambedkar, but they are destroying the Constitution by using the CAB.

“CAB will divide India on a religious line. It will destroy the Mahatma Gandhi’s India. We will fight against it because this is an anti-constitution and it will change the real nature of India,” the Veteran Congress leaders added.

He also said after the BJP government was formed in the Centre, it is trying to destabilise the Northeastern state and divide the society.

Speaking further, he said that in the forthcoming elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), the Congress party is all set to outperform all others with full confidence that would give a new shape to the party ahead.

“We are confident enough that we will go to win the upcoming ADC polls and the autocratic state government of Tripura will become opposition in the coming days,” Ramesh added.

While talking over the starvation deaths of Bru tribals in the relief camps, the former Union minister said that Food Security Act was implemented during the UPA government in 2012 and after six years in Tripura people are dying of starvation. This is pathetic from the government’s part.

“Despite having the Food Security Act the people of Bru camps are dying of starvation. It’s a crime and total violation of human rights, whereas citizens of the country are forced to die due to starvation. We demanded the immediate resumption of ration and other relief materials for the Bru refugees,” he said.

The six-member team of AICC includes former Union minister and MP Jairam Ramesh, former minister Jitendra Singh, MP Manickam Tagore, Mohammad Ali Khan, and AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik.
