Agartala: Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb had a fruitful interaction with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday evening in which they discussed on various issues like waterway connectivity through Sonamura, direct flight between Agartala and Dhaka, Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal (BBIN) services, international protocol route and export relaxation of 14 items, among others.

In the light of dinner with PM Hasina, CM Deb discussed on a direct flight between Dhaka and Agartala, to which she gave mutual consent. He also urged her for BBIN (Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal) services. Hasina had informed Deb that they are going positive in this regard. The governments of India and Bangladesh are going to sign some agreements among which BBIN implementation is included.

Bangladesh government is ready to announce inland waterways through Sonamura with the consent of the government of India. The new protocol route would also be facilitated to transportation of goods from Ashuganj port on the river Meghna in Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh to Sonamura in Sipahijala district.

In terms of exporting of products, relaxation of 14 more items is going to be included from Tripura. Earlier, Bangladesh gave consent on seven items. With this, the number of items that can be exported via Tripura to 21. Rubber and bamboo products are also included.

However, earlier in a programme on Thursday, Deb said that India and Bangladesh governments would sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a new waterway to connect river Gomati in Tripura and Meghna in Bangladesh during the trip.

“Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would meet our Prime Minister Narendra Modi during her four-day trip beginning today. It is expected that during the meeting between the prime ministers of the two countries, a wide range of bilateral issues would be discussed. An MoU is likely to be signed by them for the inclusion of the Sonamura-Daudkandi stretch,” Deb said in a function here.

He also said if the MoU is signed, a new protocol route between Bangladesh and India would be opened by connecting river Gomati in Tripura with river Meghna in Bangladesh.

“Movement of vessels on Gomati river between India and Bangladesh for providing waterway connectivity to Tripura would be permissible only after the inclusion of the Sonamura-Daudkandi stretch as part of the IBP route,” Deb said.
