Agartala: To mark the birth centenary of ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, also known as the father of Bangladesh, on March 17 next year, Bangladesh information minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday urged Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb to name a road after him and build a martyrs’ column of the 1971 liberation war of the country in Agartala.
Speaking with reporters in Agartala on Monday evening, Bangladesh minister Mahmud said that during his meeting with the Tripura chief minister, he had urged for naming a road in the name of ‘Bangabandhu’ and also build a martyrs’ column.
“During the 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh, Tripura had extended their support and over 15 lakh refuges, which was equal to that of the total population of the state, had taken shelter at that time. Therefore, we have requested the Tripura government to name a road after Bangabandhu name to commemorate his birth centenary and to build a martyrs column,” Mahmud said.
Meanwhile, speaking on the issue of drug smuggling, Mahmud said that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken zero-tolerance against drug peddlers and to avert this, many measures have been taken by the government.
“The smuggling of contraband drug items has decreased and this is a very good sign for both the countries. We are also trying to develop the connectivity between the two nations and it has also improved between Tripura and Bangladesh over the last decade. In coming years, it will improve more,” Mahmud added.
Meanwhile, Tripura CM Deb has requested Mahmud to reduce the tariff rates on some goods. “The demands of the Tripura government would be communicated to the ministry concerned of Bangladesh. Today, we have also discussed issues relating to import and export of Tripura Tea,” he told reporters.
Later, CM Deb, talking to reporters, said that the during the courtesy meeting, the Bangladesh minister has made two requests including the naming of a road in the name of Bangabandhu Mujibar Rahman and the other is to build a martyrs column here.
“I have promised him to take up the issue with due importance and discuss this with the concerned ministry of the government of India and take necessary measures,” Deb added.
