Agartala: In a move to promote afforestation, the Centre has sanctioned Rs 47,436 crore for all the states, of which Rs 183.65 crore was handed over to Tripura under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) in presence of Union minister for environment, forest and climate change Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi recently.

Tripura forest minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia took part in the event along with the other state forest ministers. The Union environment minister said, “The state budget for forests shall remain unaffected and the fund being transferred would be in addition to state budget and it is expected that all states will utilize this fund towards forestry activities to achieve the objectives of the Nationally-Determined Contributions (NDCs) of increasing its forest & tree cover, which will create an additional carbon sink equivalent to 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide by the year 2030.”

The environment minister further emphasised that the CAMPA funds cannot be used for payment of salary, travelling allowances, medical expenses, etc.

The cheque was handed over by Javadekar and Union minister of state Babul Supriyo to Tripura minister Jamatia.

“Handed over sanction letter for Rs 183.65 Cr to Tripura for Afforestation under CAMPA. The issue which was pending for more than a decade has been resolved by Narendra Modi government,” tweeted Javadekar.

Replying to his tweet, Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb said, “I would like to express my gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar for sanctioning the fund under CAMPA Act.”
