A delegation of ruling ally Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Tripura meets Union tribal affairs minister Arjun Munda in New Delhi over set of demands
Agartala: Demanding rechristening of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council as Tipraland, a team of Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Tripura (IPFT) met Union tribal affairs minister Arjun Munda in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The delegation, led by the party general secretary and state forest minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia, submitted a memorandum to the Union minister.
The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Act 1979 was passed by Parliament after a series of democratic movements launched by the Indigenous people of Tripura, under the provision of the Sixth Schedule to the Indian Constitution. But the Act came into being on January 18, 1982 and later it was upgraded under the provision of the Sixth Schedule to the Indian Constitution with effect from April 1, 1985 by the 49th Amendment to the Constitution of India
The other demand include the inclusion of Roman script in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, special recruitment drive for filing the Scheduled Tribe vacancies and to fill up the backlog vacancies.
Earlier on Tuesday, the delegation also met Union minister of state for DoNER Jitendra Singh and submitted a memorandum to him.
