Agartala: The Left Front has alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ‘goons’ are trying to terrorise the opposition party supporters ahead of the three-tier civic polls in Tripura on July 27.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Left Front convenor Bijan Dhar said that since the process of nominations filing started, not a single day went by when CPI-M supporters were not attacked.

According to Dhar, the district office in Sepahijala, Bishramganj too came under attack, where candidates were forced to remain inside the party offices. “Nobody, except for the BJP candidates were allowed to get the nomination forms. Even if one could, they were stopped on the way of filing their candidatures,” he added.

“Earlier, when we had asked for an appointment to meet the chief minister, we were denied by his office and asked to give in writing if we had anything to say. Nowhere in the country has the chief minister done that with the opposition party,” Dhar added.

Protesting against the misrule of the BJP and the role of party president and CM Biplab Kumar Deb, the Left Front said that it will stage a sit-in protest in Agartala from 11 am onwards on July 18, Dhar said.

He further said that in Rajnagar, Satchand or Bishramganj the BJP backed goons carried out massive attack over his party workers and even MLAs were injured during the filing of nomination papers.

“The nomination papers were snatched from the hands of our candidates in Dukli, Bamutia in front of the Block Development Offices, who is also the assistant returning officer (ARO) but he denied to even accept that the incident occurred at his office,” Dhar added.

The Left Front convenor also said that after the BJP-IPFT government came to power, not a single election in the state was conducted peacefully. “In the municipal by-polls, over 96% of the opposition parties could not file the nomination papers. In the present three-tier panchayat polls, the ruling BJP has won in over 86% seats without getting into the contest. This is all happening by suppressing the opposition party by threatening and attacking our supporters,” Dhar alleged.

He also said that even after much attack and pressure from BJP, candidates of the Left Front will continue to fight and give a tough fight to the ruling by participating in the civic elections on July 27.

Meanwhile, CPI-M state secretary Gautam Das said they never stopped the opposition party workers from contesting in the elections. Also, it was the CPI-M who started the ballot system voting in the three-tier panchayat elections.

“The BJP had gone to the Supreme Court for not being allowed to contest in West Bengal but what is happening here in Tripura is being ignored by the same party,” Das added.
