Agartala: The Tripura police and Border Security Force (BSF) have seized contraband items worth over Rs 1 crore from different locations of the state. Three persons have been nabbed in this connection.

Acting on a tip-off, the police seized a car from the Madhab Bari inter-state truck terminus in Jirania area of West Tripura district on Thursday.

“Three persons -- Manir Hussain (28), Alek Hussain (30) & Pritam Bhowmik (25) -- were inside the car. We also recovered 40,000 Yaba tablets worth about Rs 40 lakh and Rs 24,000 cash in cash from their possession," Jirania sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Suman Majumder said.

Meanwhile, a press release issued by BSF on Thursday said that its jawans deployed at the Srimantapur BOP in Sepahijala district received specific information about smuggling of Yaba tablets late of Wednesday night. Accordingly, a special operation was planned. Troops observed suspicious movement of one miscreant approaching near the Indo-Bangladesh border fence along with some packets.

“On being challenged, the miscreants managed to escape from the spot taking advantage of darkness. During search of the area, BSF recovered one small plastic bag containing 9,700 Yaba tablets worth Rs 48,50,000. BSF also recovered 43 cattle worth Rs 2,95,000 in the presence of independent witnesses. The seized items were handed over to Tripura police for further legal action," the press release said.

Earlier, on Monday, brown sugar worth Rs 80 lakh and Rs 5.3 lakh in cash were seized from Ambassa in Dhalai district of Tripura, around 180 km from Agartala. BSF deployed in Tripura also seized drugs worth Rs 16 lakh late on Sunday night.
